Title: Uncertain Statements About Climate Change: What Do They Tell The Public?

Abstract: This talk summarizes some key findings from a project: "Uncertainty communication and climate change", funded by the Research Council of Norway. We argue that the implicit (pragmatic) meaning of expert statements should be given more attention, both in research and by practitioners, as illustrated by the following three themes: 1. What happens when a probability estimate is revised (the trend effect). 2. What do the boundaries of an uncertainty interval convey; and 3. How to mislead people in an honest way by use of modal verbs.
