Title: From Legitimacy Judgement of Organizational Wrongdoing to Symbolic Action: An Experimental Inquiry into the Role of
Evaluative Mode

Abstract: Abstract: The legitimacy-as-perception perspective emphasizes individual cognition as the mechanism through which legitimacy judgments are formed. Research has however not yet addressed when evaluators publicly express their legitimacy judgments. We combine social evaluation and dual-process theories from the cognitive sciences to understand symbolic action following legitimacy judgments. We present an experimental inquiry into how evaluators who either actively or passively process information follow validity cues from peers and their own legitimacy judgments to decide on taking symbolic action. The experimental setting is an online petition asking consumers to publicly criticize a hotel booking website. Our results suggest that evaluators in passive evaluative mode base their motivation to take symbolic action on validity cues from peers as presented on the online protest website. Active as well as passive evaluators are however equally motivated by effective and moral evaluations, potentially questioning the theoretical dichotomy between fast-thinking, emotionally-driven, and slow-thinking, deliberative evaluators. We present new directions to study the role of evaluative mode in future social evaluation research.
